Cruiser or performance cruiser
A cruising yacht puts volume, the number of cabins and easy short-handed sailing first. A performance cruiser is built for speed, with a larger sail plan, technical sails and more complete deck hardware. The buyers are different, and so are the things that drive value.
On a performance cruiser, the condition and material of the sails, the mast and the deck hardware weigh heavily. On a cruising yacht, buyers look first at the accommodation and at what makes sailing simpler: furlers, electric winches, autopilot. Give the exact model and version in your valuation request: keel, draught, number of cabins.
Rigging, sails and keel
- standing rigging: its age and the invoice for the last replacement, which the buyer and their marine surveyor will ask for;
- mast and boom: condition of the sheaves, fittings and chainplates;
- sails: age, material, cut, and downwind sails (spinnaker, gennaker, code zero);
- genoa furler and, where fitted, mainsail furling;
- keel: fixed or lifting, with the hull-to-keel joint and keel bolts examined closely during the survey;
- deck hardware and winches, electric or manual.
The auxiliary engine
A sailing yacht's engine runs little, but it has to start every time you leave harbour. Buyers look at its hours, its annual servicing, the condition of the cooling circuit and the drive type: saildrive or shaft. An engine that smokes or starts reluctantly at the sea trial weighs on the offer straight away.
On a saildrive, the sealing diaphragm is replaced to the engine maker's schedule: keep the invoice for the last replacement. A folding or feathering propeller appeals to buyers who care about performance.
Electronics and getting ready to sell
Autopilot, chartplotter, AIS, wind instruments: electronics age quickly, and buyers look at the year more than the brand. Recent, consistent electronics are worth highlighting; original electronics on an older yacht should be described honestly.
Before listing, have the engine serviced, the rigging checked and the sails washed. Gather the invoices for major replacements: they are what justify your price against comparable yachts for sale. Indicative valuation. It does not replace a survey.
